📌Mistakes are often made by using the wrong preposition after certain words. The following list includes the words which most often give trouble. (āĻĒ্āϰা⧟āχ āĻ­ুāϞāĻ—ুāϞো āϏৃāώ্āϟি āĻšā§Ÿ āϏুāύিāϰ্āĻĻিāώ্āϟ āĻ•িāĻ›ু word-āĻāϰ āĻĒāϰে āĻ…āϝৌāĻ•্āϤিāĻ• preposition āĻŦ্āϝāĻŦāĻšাāϰেāϰ āĻŽাāϧ্āϝāĻŽে। āĻāϰāĻ•āĻŽ āϏāĻŽāϏ্āϝা āĻ•āϰে, āĻāĻŽāύ āĻ•িāĻ›ু word āύিāϚে āϤাāϞিāĻ•াāϟিāϤে āĻ…āύ্āϤāϰ্āĻ­ুāĻ•্āϤ āĻ•āϰা āĻšāϞ)


1) Absorbed (=āĻ—āĻ­ীāϰāĻ­াāĻŦে āύিāĻŦিāώ্āϟ āĻŦা āύিāĻŽāĻ—্āύ) in, at āĻŦāϏāĻŦে āύা।

Don’t say : The man was absorbed at his work.

Say : The man was absorbed in his work.

Note : Absorbed -āĻāϰ āĻĒāϰে appropriate preposition ‘in’ āĻŦāϏে। Absorbed -āĻāϰ āĻĒāϰ ‘at’ āĻŦāϏে āύা।


2) Accuse of (āĻ…āĻ­িāϝুāĻ•্āϤ āĻ•āϰা/āĻĻোāώী āĻ•āϰা), for āύ⧟।

Don’t say : She accused the man for stealing.

Say : She accused the man of stealing.

Note : But charge, takes, with: as, The man was charged with murder. (āϞāĻ•্āώāĻŖী⧟ charge, with āĻ—্āϰāĻšāĻŖ āĻ•āϰে, āϝেāĻŽāύ : The man was charged with murder.)


3) Accustomed to (āĻ…āĻ­্āϝāϏ্āϤ āĻšāĻ“ā§Ÿা), with āĻŦāϏāĻŦে āύা।

Don’t say : I’m accustomed with hot weather.

Say : I’m accustomed to hot weather.

Note : Also used to, āϝেāĻŽāύঃ He is used to the heat.


4) Afraid of (āĻ­ীāϤ/āĻļāĻ™্āĻ•িāϤ), from āĻŦāϏāĻŦে āύা।

Don’t say : Laura is afraid from the dog.

Say : Laura is afraid of the dog.

Note : Afraid āĻšāϞ- āĻ­ীāϤ, āĻāϰāĻĒāϰ āϏāĻ িāĻ• preposition-āĻāϰ āĻŦ্āϝāĻŦāĻšাāϰ āĻšāϞ- ‘of’, from āĻŦāϏাāύো āϏāĻ িāĻ• āύ⧟।


5) Aim at (āϤাāĻ• āĻ•āϰা), on āĻŦা against āĻŦāϏāĻŦে āύা।

Don’t say : She aimed on the target.

Say : She aimed at the target.

Note : At, preposition-āϟি āϏāϰ্āĻŦāĻĻা āĻ—āϤিāĻĒāĻĨ āύিāϰ্āĻĻেāĻļ āĻ•āϰāϤে āĻŦ্āϝāĻŦāĻšৃāϤ āĻšā§Ÿঃ āϝেāĻŽāύ- throw at (āĻাঁāĻĒি⧟ে āĻĒ⧜া), shout at (āĻ•াāϰো āĻĒ্āϰāϤি āϚিā§ŽāĻ•াāϰ āĻ•āϰে āĻŦāϞা), fire at (āϞāĻ•্āώ্āϝ āĻ•āϰে āĻ—ুāϞি āĻŦāϰ্āώāĻŖ āĻ•āϰা), shoot at (āϤাāĻ• āĻ•āϰে āĻ—ুāϞি āĻ›োঁ⧜া)। āϤāĻŦে Shoot (at āĻŦ্āϝāϤীāϤ) āφāϘাāϤ āĻ•āϰে āĻšāϤ্āϝা āĻ•āϰা āĻ…āϰ্āĻĨ āύিāϰ্āĻĻেāĻļ āĻ•āϰে। āϝেāĻŽāύ- He shoot a bird (= āϏে āφāϘাāϤ āĻ•āϰāϞো āĻāĻŦং āĻāϟা āĻŽāϰāϞো)। Raisul Islam Hridoy 


6) Angry with (āϰাāĻ—াāύ্āĻŦিāϤ/āĻ•্āϰুāĻĻ্āϧ/āϰুāώ্āϟ), against āύ⧟।

Don’t say :   The teacher was angry against him.

Say : The teacher was angry with him.

Note-1 : āφāĻŽāϰা āĻŦ্āϝāĻ•্āϤিāϰ āϏাāĻĨে with, āĻ•িāύ্āϤু āĻŦāϏ্āϤুāϰ āĻĒ্āϰāϤি (at)āĻ•্āϰুāĻĻ্āϧ/āϰুāώ্āϟ (angry)āĻšāχ, āϝেāĻŽāύঃ He was angry at The weather (with the weather āύ⧟)।

Note-2 : Also annoyed with, vexed with, ‘indignant with’ a person, but at a thing. (āĻāĻ•āχāĻ­াāĻŦে āĻŦ্āϝāĻ•্āϤিāϰ ‘āϏাāĻĨে’ āĻŦোāĻাāϤে Annoyed (āĻ•্āϰুāĻĻ্āϧ) with, vexed (āĻŦিāϰāĻ•্āϤ) with, indignant (āϘৃāĻŖা/āĻ•্āϰোāϧ) with। āϞāĻ•্āώāĻŖী⧟, āĻŦāϏ্āϤুāϰ ‘āĻĒ্āϰāϤি’ āĻŦোāĻাāϤে āωāĻ•্āϤ word- āĻ—ুāϞোāϰ āĻĒāϰে with-āĻāϰ āĻĒāϰিāĻŦāϰ্āϤে at āĻŦāϏে।


7) Anxious (= troubled āωāĻĻ্āĻŦিāĻ—্āύ/āĻ‰ā§ŽāĻ•āĻŖ্āĻ িāϤ) about, for āύ⧟।

Don’t say : They’re anxious for his health.

Say : They’re anxious about his health.

Note : But anxious meaning wishing very much takes for, as: Parents are anxious for their children’s success. (āϤāĻŦে Anxious āϝāĻ–āύ āϤীāĻŦ্āϰāĻ­াāĻŦে āϚাāϚ্āĻ›ে āĻāĻŽāύ āĻŦা āĻĒ্āϰāϤ্āϝাāĻļী āĻ…āϰ্āĻĨে āĻŦ্āϝāĻŦāĻšৃāϤ āĻšā§Ÿ, āϤāĻ–āύ about-āĻāϰ āĻĒāϰিāĻŦāϰ্āϤে for āĻŦāϏে। āϝেāĻŽāύঃ Parents are anxious for their children’s success.)


8) Arrive(āĻĒৌঁāĻ›াāύো) at, to āύ⧟।

Don’t say : We arrived to the village at night.

Say : We arrived at the village at night.

Note : Use arrive in with countries and large cities, as : Mr Smith has arrived in London (arrive in āĻĻেāĻļ āĻāĻŦং āĻŦ⧜ āĻļāĻšāϰ āĻŦোāĻাāϤে āĻŦ্āϝāĻŦāĻšৃāϤ āĻšā§Ÿ। āϝেāĻŽāύঃ Mr. Smith arrived in London or New York, India etc.


9) Ashamed (āϞāϜ্āϜিāϤ) of,form āύ⧟।

Don’t say : He’s now ashamed from his conduct.

Say : He’s now ashamed of his conduct.

Note : Shy āϞাāϜুāĻ•/āϏাāĻŦāϧাāύী/āĻĻ্āĻŦিāϧাāύ্āĻŦিāϤ āĻ…āϰ্āĻĨে ashamed of āĻŦ্āϝāĻŦāĻšাāϰ āĻ•āϰা āϝāĻĨাāϰ্āĻĨ āύ⧟, āϏুāϤāϰাং I am ashamed of my teacher-āĻāϰ āĻĒāϰিāĻŦāϰ্āϤে āφāĻĒāύাāϰ āĻŦāϞা āωāϚিāϤ I’m shy of my teacher.


 

10) Believe (āφāϏ্āĻĨা/āĻŦিāĻļ্āĻŦাāϏ āĻĨাāĻ•া) in, to āύ⧟।

Don’t say : We believe to God.

Say : We believe in God.

Note : To believe in means to have faith in To believe (without the in) means to regard something as true : I believe everythin he says. (To believe in āĻ…āϰ্āĻĨ āĻšāϞ āφāϏ্āĻĨা/āĻŦিāĻļ্āĻŦাāϏ āĻĨাāĻ•া, āĻĒāĻ•্āώাāύ্āϤāϰে To believe (in āĻŦ্āϝāϤীāϤ) āĻ…āϰ্āĻĨ āĻšāϞ- āϏāϤ্āϝ āĻšিāϏেāĻŦে āĻŦিāĻŦেāϚāύা āĻ•āϰা (āĻŦিāĻļ্āĻŦাāϏ āĻ•āϰা) āϝেāĻŽāύঃ I believe everything he says)


11) Boast of or about (āĻ…āĻšংāĻ•াāϰ āĻ•āϰা) , for āύ⧟।

Don’t say : James boasted for his strength.

12) Careful of, with or about (āϝāϤ্āύāĻŦাāύ/āĻŽāύāϝোāĻ—ী), for āύ⧟।

Don’t say : Elke’s very careful  for her health.

Say : Elke’s very careful of/about her health.

Or : You should be more careful with your money.

Note : Take care of (āĻŦ্āϝāĻŦāϏ্āĻĨা āĻ•āϰা/āĻ­াāϰ āύেāĻ“ā§Ÿা)। āϝেāĻŽāύঃ He takes care of his money.

13) Travel by train āχāϤ্āϝাāĻĻি, with the train āχāϤ্āϝাāĻĻি āύ⧟। 

Don’t say : He travelled with the train yesterday.

Say: He travelled by train yesterday.

Note : āφāĻŽāϰা āĻŦāϞি, by train, by tram, by boat, by aeroplane, āφāĻŦাāϰ by land, by sea, by air, by bus, in a bus, on a bus; by motor car āĻŦা in a motor car, by taxi āĻŦা in a taxi; in a cab, in a  carriage; on horse-back, on  a donkey, on a bicycle; on foot.


 


14) Complain about (āĻ…āϏāύ্āϤোāώ,āĻ…āύ্āϝা⧟,āĻĻুāϰ্āĻ­োāĻ—,āϝāύ্āϤ্āϰāĻŖা) for āύ⧟।

Don’t say : Annette complained for the weather.

Say : Annette complained about the weather.

Note : āφāĻŽāϰা āϝāĻ–āύ āĻ…āϏুāϏ্āĻĨāϤাāϰ āĻ•āĻĨা āĻŦāϞি āϤāĻ–āύ complain of āĻŦ্āϝāĻŦāĻšাāϰ āĻ•āϰি। āφāĻŽāϰা āĻŦāϞিঃ She complained of a sore throat.


15) Composed of (āϏ্āĻĨিāϰ/āϏ্āĻĨিāϰীāĻ•ৃāϤ), from āύ⧟।

Don’t say : Our class is composed from thirty students.

Say : Our class is composed of thirty students.


16) Confidence in (āφāϤ্āĻŽāĻŦিāĻļ্āĻŦাāϏ/āφāϏ্āĻĨা), to āύ⧟।

Don’t say : I have great confidence to you.

Say : I have great confidence in you.

Note : In confidence āĻāϟিāĻ“ঃ āϝেāĻŽāύ- Let me tell you something in confidence (as a secret=āĻ—োāĻĒāύে)।


17) Conform to (āĻ…āύুāϰূāĻĒ/āĻāĻ•āĻŽāϤ āĻšāĻ“ā§Ÿা), with āύ⧟।

Don’t say : We must conform with the rules.

Say : We must conform to the rules.

Note : āϤāĻŦে, comply (āϰাāϜি āĻšāĻ“ā§Ÿা/āϏāĻŽ্āĻŽāϤ āĻšāĻ“ā§Ÿা/āĻŽāϤ āĻĻে⧟া)-āĻāϰāĻĒāϰ with āĻŦāϏে। āϝেāĻŽāύঃ We’ll comply with your request. Raisul Islam Hridoy 


 

18) Congratulate on (āĻ…āĻ­িāύāύ্āĻĻāύ āϜাāύাāύো), for āύ⧟।

Don’t say : I congratulate you for your success.

Say : I congratulate you on your success.


19) Consist of (āĻ—āĻ িāϤ āĻšāĻ“ā§Ÿা), from āύ⧟।

Don’t say : A year consists from twelve months.

Say :  A year consists of twelve months.

Note : āĻ…āϧিāĻ• āϏāϤāϰ্āĻ•āϤা āĻ…āĻŦāϞāĻŽ্āĻŦāύ āĻ•āϰāϤে āĻšāĻŦে, passive voice āĻ consist āĻŦ্āϝāĻŦāĻšাāϰে।


20) Covered with (āĻ›ে⧟ে āϝাāĻ“ā§Ÿা,āφāϚ্āĻ›াāĻĻিāϤ āĻšāĻ“ā§Ÿা), by āύ⧟।

Don’t say : The mountains are covered by snow.

Say : The mountains are covered with/in snow.


 

21) Cure of (āφāϰোāĻ—্āϝ/āϚিāĻ•িā§ŽāϏা/āĻŽুāĻ•্āϤ āĻ•āϰা), from āύ⧟।

Don’t say : The man was cured from his illness.

Say : The man was cured of his illness.

Not e : āĻ•িāύ্āϤু cure āϝāĻ–āύ Noun āĻšিāϏেāĻŦে āĻŦāϏে āϏে āĻ•্āώেāϤ্āϰে for (āϜāύ্āϝ) āĻ•ে āĻ—্āϰāĻšāĻŖ āĻ•āϰে। āϝেāĻŽāύঃ There is no cure for that disease, āĻ…āύ্āϝāĻĻিāĻ•ে cure āĻāϰāĻĒāϰে preposition from āĻŦāϏেāύা।


22) Depend on or upon (āύিāϰ্āĻ­āϰ/āĻ…āĻŦāϞāĻŽ্āĻŦāύ āĻ•āϰা, āύিāϰ্āĻ­āϰāĻļীāϞ/āĻŽুāĻ–াāĻĒেāĻ•্āώী āĻšāĻ“ā§Ÿা),  from āύ⧟। 

Don't say: It depends from her. 

Say: It depends on (or upon) her. 

Note:  Rely (āύিāϰ্āĻ­āϰ/āĻ­āϰāϏা āĻ•āϰা)-āĻāϰ āĻĒāϰেāĻ“ on āĻŦা  upon āĻŦāϏে। āϝেāĻŽāύঃ I can't rely on (or upon) him.


 

23) Deprive of (āĻŦāĻž্āϚিāϤ/āĻŦিāϰāĻšিāϤ āĻ•āϰা),  from āύ⧟। 

Don't say: Nelson Mandela was deprived from his freedom. 

Say: Nelson Mandela was deprived of his freedom.


24) Die of an illness (āϰোāĻ—/āĻ…āϏুāϏ্āĻĨāϤাāϰ āϜāύ্āϝ āĻŽাāϰা āϝাāĻ“ā§Ÿা), from an illness āύ⧟।

Don't say: Many people have died from malaria. 

Say: Many people have died of malaria.

25) Different from (āĻ­িāύ্āύāϰāĻ•āĻŽ/āĻĒৃāĻĨāĻ•),  than āύ⧟। 

Don't say: My book is different than yours. 

Say: My book is different from yours.


26) Disappointed by, about āĻŦা at, from āύ⧟। 

(a) by/at/about: 

Don't say: Phillipa was disappointed from the low mark she got in the test. 

Say: Phillipa was disappointed by/about/at the low mark she got in the test. 

(b) with/in:

Don't say: Jane was disappointed from her son. 

Say: Jane was disappointed with/in her son. 

Note :  āφāĻŽāϰা āĻŦ্āϝāĻ•্āϤিāϰ āĻĒূāϰ্āĻŦে with āĻ…āĻĨāĻŦা in,āĻŦāϏ্āϤুāϰ āĻĒূāϰ্āĻŦে at, about āĻ…āĻĨāĻŦা by āĻāĻŦং gerund āĻāϰ āĻĒূāϰ্āĻŦে at āĻŦ্āϝāĻŦāĻšাāϰ āĻ•āϰি, āϝেāĻŽāύ: Keith is very disappointed at not winning the prize. We use that (optional before a new clause): I was disappointed (that) I didn't get an invitation.


 


27) Divide into parts (āĻ…ংāĻļে/āĻ­াāĻ—ে āĻ­াāĻ— āĻ•āϰা), in parts āύ⧟।

Don't say: I divided the cake in four parts. 

Say: I divided the cake into four parts. 

Note : āϤāĻŦে āĻ•োāύ āĻŦāϏ্āϤুāĻ•ে āĻ…āϰ্āϧেāĻ• (in half) āĻŦা āĻĻুāĻ‡ā§Ÿে( in two) āĻ­াāĻ— āĻ•āϰা āϝেāϤে āĻĒাāϰে। āϝেāĻŽāύঃ Paul divided the apple in half (or in two).


28) No doubt (n) (āϏংāĻļ⧟/āϏāύ্āĻĻেāĻš) of āĻŦা about, for āύ⧟। 

Don't say: I've no doubt for his ability. 

Say: I've no doubt of (or about) his ability. 

Note :  Doubtful (āϏāύ্āĻĻিāĻ—্āύ/āϏāύ্āĻĻেāĻšāĻĒ্āϰāĻŦāĻŖ)-āĻāϰ āĻĒāϰেāĻ“ of āĻŦāϏে। āϝেāĻŽāύ: I am doubtful of his ability to pass.


 


29) Dressed in (āĻĒāϰিāĻšিāϤ), with āύ⧟। 

Don't say: The woman was dressed with black. 

Say:The woman was dressed in black.

Note :  The woman was in black āĻāϟিāĻ“ āϏāĻ িāĻ•।


30) Exception to (āĻŦāĻšিāϰ্āĻ­ূāϤ), of āύ⧟।

Don't say: This is an exception of the rule. 

Say: This is an exception to the rule.

Note: āφāĻŽāϰা āĻŦāϞি, with the exception of (āĻŦ্āϝāϤীāϤ), āϝেāĻŽāύ: She liked all her subjects with the exception of physics.


31) Exchange for (āĻŦāĻĻāϞি/āĻŦিāύিāĻŽā§Ÿ āĻ•āϰা), by āύ⧟। 

Don't say: He exchanged his collection of matchboxes by some foreign stamps. 

Say: He exchanged his collection of matchboxes for some foreign stamps. 

Note : In exchange (āĻŦāĻĻāϞে/āĻŦিāύিāĻŽā§Ÿে)-āĻāϰ āĻĒāϰেāĻ“ for āĻŦāϏে, āϝেāĻŽāύঃ He gave them his old car in exchange for a new one.


 


32) Fail in (āĻŦ্āϝāϰ্āĻĨ/āĻ…āĻ•ৃāϤāĻ•াāϰ্āϝ āĻšāĻ“ā§Ÿা), from āύ⧟। 

Don't say: Steven failed from maths last year.

Say: Steven failed in maths last year.


33) Full of (āĻĒূāϰ্āĻŖ/āĻ­āϰা/āϟāχāϟুāĻŽ্āĻŦুāϰ),  with  āĻŦা from āύ⧟। 

Don't say: The jar was full with (or from) oil. 

Say: The jar was full of oil. 

Note :  āϤāĻŦে Fill-āĻāϰ āĻĒāϰে with āĻŦāϏে, āϝেāĻŽāύঃ Jane filled the glass with water।


34) Get rid of (āύিāώ্āĻ•ৃāϤি/āĻ…āĻŦ্āϝāĻšāϤি āĻĒাāĻ“ā§Ÿা),  from āύ⧟। 

Don't say: I'll be glad to get rid from him. 

Say: I'll be glad to get rid of him.


 


35) Glad (āĻ–ুāĻļি/āφāύāύ্āĻĻিāϤ) of āĻŦা about, from āĻŦা with āύ⧟। Raisul Islam Hridoy 

Don't say: Francis was glad from (or with) receiving your letter.  

Say: Francis was glad of (or about) receiving your letter.

Note : āĻĢāϞাāĻĢāϞ (result)-āĻ āĻ–ুāĻļি āĻŦোāĻাāϤে glad at āĻŦ্āϝāĻŦāĻšৃāϤ āĻšā§Ÿ। āϝেāĻŽāύঃ He is glad at having received a good mark.


36) Good at (āĻ­াāϞ/āĻĻāĻ•্āώ/āϝোāĻ—্āϝ),  in āύ⧟। 

Don't say: My sister's good in maths. 

Say: My sister's good at maths.

Note 1 : Bad (āĻ–াāϰাāĻĒ/āĻŽāύ্āĻĻ), clever (āϚাāϞাāĻ•/āĻĻāĻ•্āώ), quick (āĻĒ্āϰাāĻŖāĻŦāύ্āϤ/āϚāϟāĻĒāϟে), slow (āϧীāϰ/āĻŽāύ্āĻĨāϰ) āχāϤ্āϝাāĻĻিāϰ āĻĒāϰেāĻ“ at āĻŦāϏে। āϤāĻŦে weak (āĻĻুāϰ্āĻŦāϞ)-āĻāϰ āĻĒāϰে in āĻŦāϏে। āϝেāĻŽāύঃ He's weak in grammar. 

Note 2 : He's good in class āĻ…āϰ্āĻĨ- āĻ•্āϞাāϏে āϤাāϰ āφāϚāϰāĻŖ āĻ­াāϞ।


37) Guard against (āϏāϤāϰ্āĻ• āĻĨাāĻ•া/āϏাāĻŦāϧাāύ āĻšāĻ“ā§Ÿা), from āύ⧟। 

Don't say: You must guard from bad habits. 

Say: You must guard against bad habits.


 


38) Guilty of (āĻ…āĻĒāϰাāϧী/āĻĻোāώী), for āύ⧟।
