By a Staff Reporter, Ludhiana , 5th June : A Cyclonic storm struck the city and the adjoining areas last evening . For the last few days, the mercurry had shot up to 40 degree Celsius and there was depression in the area. Official sources from the state capital Chandigarh said that the storm had lasted over 40 minutes blowing off a large number off a large number of houses. Approximately over 4000 people were rendered homeless.
The eight villages were flattened by the cyclones. 3500 farmers inhabiting these villages, were taken unaware by the storm. Their mud houses and thatched roofs were blown off. In the city, 24 women were reported to be killed. The toll of death has been estimated at about 50 persons apart from a number of domestic animals. The strong winds raged at a speed of 100 kilometers per hour. The situation was further complicated, when the city and the adjoining areas were lashed by heavy rains.
Official estimate confirmed that nearly 5000 people were affected by the strom. The rescue operations was hindered by torrential rain that accompanied the strom. Those injured by flying debris and falling of roofs were admitted to the various hospitals. Being a wedding period of the year, many marriage processions underwent quite a heavy loss in the form of lives and injuries. The cars and scooters were tossed up by speeding winds.
Electricity and telephone lines snapped. The whole city was plunged in darkness. The traffic came to a stand still. In some places, there was stampede causing panic in the city. When contacted, the D.M. Prabhat kumar said that it would take 2 to 3 days to restore normal electric supply in view of the devastating damage.
➤ 2. Reckless Driving and Traffic Jams
By a Staff Reporter, Kolkata, 5th March : Travelling either in a public bus or in a private vehicle, is a living nightmare in the city. Travelling by bikes is more dangerous as a result of sudden increase of the four wheelers in the city. Given the conditions of the roads, travelling is hazardous. Traffic jams and crossing the intersections take away most of our time and energy. The work that one can do in two hours takes the whole day to complete it. Most of the areas in the city are prone to traffic jams. It is no exaggeration as it takes two hours to reach the central market from clock tower. Otherwise, it is matter of only one hour drive.
The citizens have the habit of doing everything on the roads. It may be a marriage procession or mourning. They are unmindful of the inconvenience caused by vehicular traffic. They do not mind parking scooters, bikes and cars in front of the shops which often results in bottlenecks. Dharnas, rallies and public demonstrations are held on the busy routers in the city.
During the peak hours of traffic in the morning and evening, the conditions are even worse. Encroachments are the older of the day. The congestion on the roads is caused by disobeying the rules of the road. In the last two years, three flyovers have been constructed to make travelling safe and comfortable. As a matter of fact, the traffic police do not take stern action against illegal parking and encroachments and reckless driving. The condition of the roads more problems to tarffic jams.
No wonder, acccidents, mostly fatal make one wary of driving. School boys and girls are driving vehicles without license. They are reckless drivers. Being young, they don't care about the hazards they pose to others. School authorities and traffic police need to conduct training classes in schools for teaching the young the traffic rules. The training, they are supposed to get, will have lasting impression on their minds. Ultimately, the safety on the road depends on the police as to how they enforce law. Strict checking and stringent enforcing of already existing law can instill fear in citizens. otherwise, the chaotic conditions on roads are likely to continue.
➤ 3. Water Logging : The Burning Problem
By a Staff Reorter, Mathura , 29th July : Severe rains lashed Mathura on Monday evening leading to water logging and traffic jams at many places. Delhi road had about a foot deep water causing many vehicles to stop. Water logging under Bhagat Singh bridge in the main market also caused many motorists to stop in the midst of water resulting in the disrupted traffic and traffic jams. Many vehicles particularly two wheelers got stuck and sank in the accumulated water under the bridge. Even traffic lights stopped working. Traffic at Krishna Nagar intersection also got disrupted beacuse of heavy downpour. It was difficult for the pedestrians to pass through knee-deep water. The passengers on the Bus stand were stranded.
when contacted, the District Magistrate blamed the unusual heavy rain in the city. According to him, every drainage system has an optimum capacity beyond which, it can not handle rain water. To prove his point he cited the example of Mumbai, which has the best drainage system in the country. He denied that the municipal authorities maintained the drains unproperly. According to him, whenever it rains, the additional load effects the sewers and when they are full, the rain water starts spilling over to darins and streets. However, water logging is a common sight during rainy season. Non-functional street lights add to the number of accidents on roads. The failure of street lights add to the woes of the common man. Drainage and sewerage system coupled with damaged roads pose a serious threat to the life and property of the citizens.
Town planners have miserably failed on this acccount. They make promises every year and by next rainy season, they are transferred. There is lack of accountability on the part of the authorities that amounts negligence of duty.
